Exploring Underground Beauty at the
Lake of the Ozarks

There are nearly 5,400 registered and mapped caves in Missouri, with 300 “wild” caves in the three counties surrounding Central Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks. Wild caves that have been developed for public tours through the installation of paved walkways, handrails and lights are called “show caves.” Of the 22 show caves in Missouri, three noteworthy ones are found in the Lake area. With a consistently comfortable temperature year-round, they are appropriate for the entire family, and special clothing or equipment is not necessary.

Bridal Cave is the oldest cave in the area – some 46 million years in existence – and is the site of a legendary Indian wedding ceremony held in the early 1800s. In keeping with tradition, over 1,900 couples have used this stalactite-adorned cave as their chapel. Rated as one of the most scenic caves in America , Bridal Cave is accessible by land or by water. Located on Lake Road 5-88, two miles north of Camdenton off Hwy. 5. Open daily, year-round, hours vary. Admission fees apply, call for current prices. Phone: 573-346-2676. www.bridalcave.com.

Jacob's Cave is the largest cave in the area and the only walk-through cave in the state that is totally accessible to persons with disabilities. The cave, known for its depth illusion, features the world's largest geode (a hollow, usually spherical rock with crystals lining the inside wall), reflective pools, ceiling sponge work and prehistoric bones. Located off of State Road TT north of Gravois Mills. Open daily, year-round, hours vary. Admission fees apply, call for current prices. Phone: 573-378-4374. www.jacobscave.com.

Ozark Caverns, in Lake of the Ozarks State Park , is an ideal destination for a dramatic change of scenery or when the Ozarks sun begins to blaze. Each adult visitor is given a hand-held lantern as guides take groups into part of the world many have never experienced before. The spectacular Angel's Shower is among the highlighted sights. The perpetual flow of water seems to spring directly from the rocks above into two massive basins below. Located off Hwy. 54 on Route A. Admission fees apply, call for current prices and days/hours of operation. Phone: 573-346-2500. www.mostateparks.com/lakeozark/cave.htm.
